About Dr. Martinez
Maria Belen Martinez, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who earned her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland. She previously worked at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and held a faculty appointment at Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry.
Dr. Martinez provides individual psychotherapy to young adults and adults across the lifespan, working with clients from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Her approach is collaborative, empathic, and grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on mindfulness, values-driven action, and developing psychological flexibility. She also integrates evidence-based techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and relational frameworks to meet each client’s unique needs.
In therapy, Dr. Martinez helps clients increase self-awareness, navigate life challenges, and build coping strategies while fostering meaningful personal growth. She provides support and insight to help clients recognize their strengths and live in alignment with their values.
Her clinical interests include depression, anxiety, maternal mental health (postpartum depression and anxiety), bipolar disorder, self-esteem issues, trauma and abuse, stress, life transitions, grief/loss, and relationship difficulties. Dr. Martinez has completed advanced training in Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders through Postpartum Support International and the DBT Intensive Training through Behavioral Tech.
